Summer in the Hamptons Lyric Book

To have their first experience of designing a book, Flagler students were asked to create a lyric book of a song of their choosing. The book includes a cover with the song title and artist, at least 8 spreads for song lyrics, and a spread for the musician’s biography, and one more page of the student’s choosing. Students created an InDesign file with their lyric spreads and a separate document with their cover and back cover art for printing purposes. For binding students were able to explore saddle stitch bindings or spiral bindings; both would give student variability in number of spreads whether it was a multiple of 4 or 2. Students are pushed to use mixed media techniques and have a selected designer to use as inspiration. It was suggested to use a collage process to come upon a design solution and students completed a design principle exercise as a starting point for spread layouts.
This lyric book features two separate love stories- the lyrics Brooke Alexx wrote about her parents love story and the visual pictures of the artist’s grandparents love story.  The artist has added little elements of their grandparents story yet the viewer of the booklet does not need to have knowledge of these elements to appreciate how it is a love story or the aesthetics of the spreads. Due to these personal touches the booklet has been spiral bound into a chipboard linen cover for a more scrapbook like experience. For reference, a few of these examples include the addition of pressed flowers as it was a hobby of the artist’s grandmother, the opening spread recreating how the artist’s grandparents met, and a Fourth of July spread as it is typically a family celebration for the artist. The target audience aligns with the selected musician’s main demographic; teens to young adults. This does sway mostly women as she does have songs that are more geared towards them but there are many songs that many people could hear on the radio and enjoy. The connection the audience finds with her music lies in Brooke Alexx’s ability to write about nostalgic and aspirational feel-good memories that most commonly stem from coming of age moments. The whimsical and happy feeling that spreads across all her art; whether it be lyrical or visual, can quickly turn a bad mood into a good one, which is another reason her target audience appreciates her craft.
